St Peter and Paul's Church

ST PETER AND PAUL'S CHURCH
Byron Street
(Reginald Fairlie, 1929) Simple but impressive Romanesque style Roman Catholic church in red brick by important Edinburgh church, country house and restoration architect. Inside octagonal columns form a wide nave, flat timber-panelled ceiling and Stations of the Cross thought to be by Meredith Williams. Adjacent presbytery also by Fairlie and school in similar style (not open) by W W Friskin, 1930. Completely re-ordered 2008 by architect J F Stephen of Glamis in preparation for Year of St Paul (June 2008-June 2009 being the 2000 year anniversary of the apostle's birth, as inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI on 29 June 2008).

St Patrick's RC Church

ST PATRICK'S RC CHURCH
3 Arthurstone Terrace
(T M Cappon, 1897) Impressive red sandstone church with Scots revival style corner tower and belfry, and almost Art Nouveau detailing by Cappon's then assistant W G Lamond (who later worked with W H Langlands on the Dundee schools).

Open Saturday 10.00am-2.00pm. Organ Recital at 1.00pm. Sunday Mass at 9.30am followed by refreshments in the Memorial Hall. Parking at building.

Margan Academy

margan Academy

MORGAN ACADEMY
Forfar Road
(Peddie & Kinnear, 1863-66, restoration by Dundee City Council with Simpson & Brown Architects, 1999-2004) Important Gothic-revival school which was all but lost in disastrous fire of 1999. The Council took the admirable decision to faithfully rebuild the fire damaged exterior and create new interiors within, enabling better access and circulation, an additional storey of teaching accommodation and a magnificent new atrium-like central hall, whilst restoring original features like the east-west corridor and former chapel ceiling.

Open Sunday 12.00noon-4.00pm for guided tours by senior pupils. Leaflet, guided tour and parking at building.

MAIN PAVILION , BAXTER PARK
Between Baxter Park Terrace and Bingham Terrace / Pitkerro Road and Arbroath Road
(Sir Joseph Paxton, 1859-63) One of UK's best 19th century ‘People's Parks' laid out by the most influential landscape designer of the day: Paxton created formal and informal spaces on gently sloping parkland overlooking the Tay. The pavilion restoration was completed in August 2006 and it was officially reopened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 July 2007, following restoration by Dundee City Council, assisted by Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland. The pavilion sits in the centre of the main terrace, designed as an open Italianate loggia, and is now glazed to provide a function and exhibition space. The marble statue of Sir David Baxter has been returned to the centre niche. The west room has been converted into a cafe. The pavilion is available for many and varied functions, gatherings, exhibitions, dinners, etc, and is a very popular wedding venue.

Claypotts Castle

 

CLAYPOTTS CASTLE
Claypotts Road, West Ferry
(16th century) One of the most important examples of a 16th century Z-plan tower house. Claypotts is distinctive for its square plan garrets corbelled out over two round towers. Open free by Historic Scotland for Doors Open Day.

ST LUKE'S AND QUEEN STREET CHURCH
West Queen Street, Broughty Ferry
(Hippolyte Blanc, 1883-84) Magnificent cruciform plan church, richly detailed interior finishes throughout and stained glass by Burne-Jones and William Morris.

Open Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm. Coffee morning . Parking at building.

St Stephen's and West Church

ST STEPHEN'S AND WEST CHURCH
Westfield Road / Brook Street, Broughty Ferry
(T S Robertson, 1871) Impressive church with galleried nave and many interesting features. Outstanding series of stained glass windows by Edward Burne-Jones, manufactured by Morris & Co.

Open Sunday 12.00-4.00pm. Church service from 11.00am, all welcome. Refreshments, leaflet, guided tour.

St Mary's Scottish Episcopal Church

ST MARY'S SCOTTISH EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Queen Street, Broughty Ferry.
(GG Scott, 1858 & 1870, J M Robertson, 1887, R Lorimer, 1911) Important Gothic revival church. Lorimer extended the nave and chancel and designed the choir-stalls, pulpit, reredos and war memorial. Exemplary conservation work, particularly on the unique painted panels of the reredos (John Duncan, 1917) and restored stained glass of national significance with redecoration in the style of GG Scott completed 2002.

Open Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm and Sunday 1.00pm-4.00pm. Refreshments, exhibition, leaflet and guided tours.

Nicoll Russell Studios

NICOLL RUSSELL STUDIOS
111 King Street, Broughty Ferry
The studios have been developed by this talented and expanding firm of architects from a previously neglected building which has had its own makeover and given a new lease of life. An opportunity to meet the designers and experience their working environment, which offers an interesting insight into the range of creative, challenging and inspirational projects being undertaken by the practice throughout the United Kingdom.

Open Saturday 9.30am-4.00pm. Refreshments, exhibition, leaflet, guided tour, demonstrations.

BROUGHTY FERRY NEW KIRK
370 Queen Street, Broughty Ferry
(Andrew Heiton, 1865) Cruciform-plan Gothic style church, described when opened as the East Free Church as ‘the handsomest Presbyterian Church of its size that we have seen in Scotland'. On display are embroidered panels of Broughty Ferry landmarks, transferred temporarily from St Aidan's Church whilst Broughty's original Parish Church, is refurbished as a worship centre and halls for congregational and community use.

Open Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm and Sunday at 1.00-4.00pm. Refreshments, exhibition, leaflets. Sunday service at 11.00am.

Broughty Castle

BROUGHTY CASTLE
Broughty Ferry Harbour
(1490 and RR Anderson, 1861) The castle was ruinous by the 19th century, when it was reconstructed by the War Office. The building is operated by Dundee City Council's Leisure and Communities Department, and cared for by Historic Scotland. New for 2008 is the Orchar Collection Gallery which displays 30 paintings from the Orchar Collection - a selection of portraits, landscapes and still lifes by artists of the Robert Scott Lauder Group. There are also 20th century paintings by Alec Grieve, Philip de Laszlo and James McIntosh Patrick.

Open Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm. Visit the fascinating displays on the life and times of Broughty Ferry, its people, the environment and the wildlife that live close by.

EASTERN PRIMARY SCHOOL
2 Whinnybrae, Broughty Ferry
(J Langlands & WG Lamond, 1911) Rectangular plan Art Nouveau school with little altered interiors. Many features include range in former cookery room, fireplaces and cloakrooms.
