GILFILLAN MEMORIAL CHURCH
24 Whitehall Crescent
(Malcolm Stark, 1887) This very ornamental Baroque-style facade at the centre of Whitehall Crescent reveals a large galleried auditorium.

Open Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm and Sunday 11.00am-3.00pm. Refreshments.

City Chambers

CITY CHAMBERS
(JJ Burnet, 1924, opened 1933) City Square was begun in 1914-22 with the Caird Hall complex, then the east and west wings were added in 1930-33 by city architect, James MacLellan Brown, based on Burnet's scheme of 1924. Enter by the main door at 19 City Square to visit the Council Chambers and Lord Provost's room and reception room. See the Council website for further information.

City Archives

DUNDEE CITY ARCHIVES
(James Thomson, 1914-22) Discover the wide variety of records, ranging from the 12th century to the present, held in the City Archives which occupy the former Education Department offices below the Caird Hall. Some of these records, including maps and photographs, will be on display and staff and volunteers from the Friends of Dundee City Archives will explain how they can be used to find out more about the history of Dundee, its buildings and its people. The Shore

THE SHORE
15 Shore Terrace, foot of Castle Street
(George Smith, 1828) Important classical revival building, originally the Exchange Coffee House, but survived through much of the 20th century as a printers' workshop. Restored in early 1990s as a restaurant and now reused as a pioneering centre with a diverse range of arts, music and media facilities for young persons. See the Shore's website for further information.

St Paul's Episcopal Cathedral

ST PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL
(GG Scott, 1853) Outstanding Gothic revival church built on the Castle Rock at the request of Bishop Alexander Penrose Forbes whose tomb and memorial are in the chancel. Impressive lofty interior with good stained glass by Hardman & Co, Scott & Draper and Gibbs. Ancient font originally from Lindores Abbey. Italian mosaic by Salviati of Venice at High Altar. Fine 3-manual Hill Norman & Beard pipe organ. See the cathedral's website for further information.

Open Saturday and Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm. Leaflets; tea & coffee in the Cathedral both days. Lunchtime concert by Tayside Opera Chorus 1.00pm on Saturday (charge applies for concert, tickets at the door). Sunday service at 11.00am.

North Carr Lightship

NORTH CARR LIGHTSHIP
South Victoria Dock Road (opposite City Quay)
(A & J Inglis, Pointhouse Shipyard Glasgow, 1933) A succession of lightships marked the dangerous North Carr Rock, the outermost part of Fife Ness, from 1889 until this one – the last in Scotland – was replaced by buoy in 1975. She become a floating museum in Anstruther harbour until 1994 when she moved to the security of Dundee's Victoria Dock, where she serves as headquarters and depot ship of the Maritime Volunteer Service. Restoration works from the bulwarks upwards were completed in 2005. A major refit is planned for 2009. See the North Carr website for further information.

ST ANDREW'S PARISH CHURCH AND GLASITE CHAPEL
King Street (next to the Wellgate Centre)
(Samuel Bell, 1772) St Andrew's is the Trades' Church; stained glass and trades banners of particular note. The distinctive octagonal church hall was the 1777 Glasite Meeting House. See the church's website for further information.

Wighton Heritage Centre

 

WIGHTON HERITAGE CENTRE
Dundee Central Library, Wellgate

The Wighton Heritage Centre for the Study and Appreciation of Scottish Music was opened by Dr Sheena Wellington on 24 November, 2003. The centre houses the world-famous Wighton Collection of early printed music and performs a vital role in furthering the study and development of music in Scotland. The Wighton database is accessible from computer terminals, and the majority of the works may be consulted on microfilm or in digital format. In addition to musical activities taking place in the Wighton during Doors Open Day, there will be an opportunity to revisit Dundee Central Library's Deidonum Exhibition, which marked the 500 Years of Printing in Scotland celebrations (see www.deidonum.org).

ST MARY'S - OUR LADY OF VICTORIES RC CHURCH
Forebank Road / Powrie Place.

(George Mathewson, 1850) Massive Byzantine-Romanesque church hidden within the east Hilltown streets, its twin Art Nouveau campanili (TM Cappon and W G Lamond, 1900) now gilded and prominent on the skyline. Inside an impressive high vaulted nave and chancel, arcaded aisle and a carved and gilded altar.

Open Saturday and Sunday 10.30-2.00pm. Organ Recital at 1.30pm. Sunday Mass at 11.15am followed by refreshments in church hall. Parking off Forebank Road.

DENS ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL
77 Dens Road
(WG Lamond assisting J H Langlands, 1908) One of the important series of schools in this architect's distinctive Art Nouveau style opening in its centenary year. The interior is planned around corridors with central halls at ground and first floor levels with arcades and internal windows to borrow daylight from the classrooms. Some internal detail lost during 1970s refit. Interesting features survive from original Plenum heating system, including circular rubble air intake in front of building.

Open Sunday 10.00am-1.00pm. Choir will sing at 12.00noon. Pupils will welcome visitors and provide tours of the school. Parking at school.

St Salvador's Church

ST SALVADOR'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Church Street, off Carnegie Street, Hilltown
(GF Bodley, 1857-74) Nationally important Gothic revival church with amazingly rich Pre-Raphaelite decorative schemes. High quality furniture, significant choir screen and painted glass. See the church's website for further information.

Open Saturday 10.00am–4.00pm and Sunday 10.00am-1.00pm. Sunday services Low Mass at 9.00 and Sung High Mass at 11.00am. Parking at church.
