Dundee Historic Environment Trust

Dundee Historic Environment Trust set up in 2004 to promote and encourage the conservation, protection and improvement of the historic architectural and physical environment of Dundee. It does this by the provision of two grant schemes and by giving advice, producing publications, organising events, exhibitions, activities, etc. for people interested in the history of buildings and architecture in Dundee, Scotland.

The initiative for the four new 'city heritage trusts' in Scotland came through the findings of the Scottish Executive's Cities Review, based on the model of successful historic environment trusts in Edinburgh and Glasgow, with Historic Scotland providing funding, in partnership with Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise Tayside.

The Trust formally came into being on 8 June 2004, and held its first Board Meeting three weeks later. There are nine Trustees, headed by Chairman Graham McNicol. The Director is Adam Swan, previously Dundee City Council's Conservation Officer, and the office at 19 Dock Street is in a historic building, the 1828 former Exchange Coffee House.   The two grant schemes run by Dundee Historic Environment Trust are separately funded and have different criteria. The Historic Environment Grant Scheme is targeted at particular projects identified by the Trust, and must be located in outstanding conservation areas. The focus for this scheme is through the Trust's Action Plan. The Trust has recently completed a 'Baseline Assessment' of the city's built heritage to determine where this money will best be spent. Applications are now being sought.

Dundee's award winning Facade Enhancement Grant Scheme was previously managed by Dundee City Council, with nearly £1.2 million of grants provided by DCC and SET generating an additional private sector spend of £7.3 million between 1994 and 2004. The Trust is now administering the scheme and has allocated almost all the funds available for 2006-07. Applications for assistance in the city centre and Albert Street areas can still be submitted.

Dundee Historic Environment Trust has also taken over the organisation of Dundee's annual Doors Open Day programme, on behalf of Dundee City Council. The 2006 event was on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September. Like the Trust's first two events in September 2004 and 2005, it proved a great success. The 2007 programme will again include a wide range of interesting buildings, old and new, located across the city - check again for details in summer 2007.
